Mexican-born Nihonga painter, researcher, educator, and computer engineer based in Kyoto.
Born in Guadalajara, Mexico, in 1988, Ismael F. Alvarez works across Japanese painting, academic research, and creative education. His studio practice uses mineral pigments and washi while drawing on Mexican and Mesoamerican imagery, bringing two visual traditions into a contemporary conversation.
Education
Alvarez earned a Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Engineering from the University of Guadalajara in 2011. In Japan, he completed the Japanese Painting Special Course at Kyoto Saga University of Arts in 2019, received an MFA in Japanese Painting from Kyoto Seika University in 2021, and completed a Ph.D. in Art at Kyoto Seika University in March 2026.
Artistic Practice
His primary medium is Nihonga: mineral pigments bound with nikawa and applied to washi. The matte surfaces and granular color of these materials connect his work to Japanese painting traditions, while Maya archaeology, Mexican muralism, landscape, memory, and impermanence shape its imagery. His broader practice has also included scent-based performances and collaborative projects in France.
Research & Publications
His research examines Japanese painter Kojin Toneyama and the artistic exchange between Japan and Mexico. It follows Toneyama's encounters with the 1955 Mexican Art Exhibition, Maya civilization, Mesoamerican rubbings, and the Mexican muralist movement.
Teaching & Cross-disciplinary Work
Before concentrating on art, Alvarez worked professionally as a programmer and web designer. He now brings that technical background into creative education, teaching drawing and painting to children and developing ways for art and technology to support curiosity and intercultural learning. He speaks Spanish, English, and Japanese.

メキシコ生まれ、京都を拠点に活動する日本画家・研究者・教育者・コンピューターエンジニア。
1988年メキシコ・グアダラハラ生まれ。日本画、学術研究、創造教育を横断して活動している。岩絵具と和紙を用い、メキシコおよびメソアメリカの図像を取り入れながら、日本とメキシコの二つの視覚文化を現代的な対話へとつなげている。
学歴
2011年グアダラハラ大学工学部コンピューター工学科卒業。2019年京都嵯峨美術大学日本画領域特別研修課程修了。2021年京都精華大学大学院芸術研究科日本画領域博士前期課程修了（MFA）。2026年3月、同大学院博士後期課程を修了し、博士（芸術）を取得。
制作活動
主な画材は、和紙、岩絵具、水干絵具、膠。日本画のマットな質感と粒子のある色彩を生かしながら、マヤ遺跡、メキシコ壁画運動、風景、記憶、無常を題材としている。フランスでは香りを用いたパフォーマンスや共同制作にも参加した。
研究・出版
日本人画家・利根山光人と日本・メキシコ間の美術交流を研究している。1955年のメキシコ美術展、マヤ文明、メソアメリカの拓本、メキシコ壁画運動との関係から、利根山の芸術的変容を考察している。
教育・分野横断的な活動
美術に専念する以前は、プログラマーおよびウェブデザイナーとして勤務した。現在はその技術的背景も生かし、子どもたちに絵画を教えながら、美術とテクノロジーを通じて好奇心、創造力、異文化理解を育む活動に取り組んでいる。使用言語はスペイン語、英語、日本語。
